Michaela Yanish

South African born and Canadian raised artist, Michaela, wants her pieces to elicit the feelings of a fable or fantasy. Her art is for those wishing to have a tangible representation of an intangible aspect of their life; inspired by the philosophical exploration of the self and the idea of becoming and belonging as a young adult. The goal is to make one nostalgic, perhaps even for a place you don’t even know. Michaela also has a great interest in genealogy, medieval imagery, the northern renaissance, and iconography. She aims to emulate these themes in their art. She’s also always dreaming of being able to explore mystical landscapes, both real and fictional, and her art is a way for her to find those places and give them some life.

She particularly enjoys experimenting with colour, layers, and texture while producing vivid and emotional pieces. Her preferred medium is acrylic and oil, but she occasionally ventures into digital and fibre. Michaela graduated from MacEwan University in 2019 with a diploma in Fine Arts, with a focus in painting, and continues to paint as often as she can while working a full-time job and being newly engaged. When she’s not painting, she’s working on her South African ancestry research, reading historical romances, daydreaming about traveling to mystical places, or doing karate.

Michaela currently holds the position of Recording Secretary for the Edmonton Art Club.
