Frances Hessels

I have always been interested in art. Drawing and painting has been a lifelong hobby. After receiving my B.A and B. Ed., I taught for EPSB. Throughout my career I taught art along with other subjects to Elementary school children and used my interest in art to create teaching materials.

Throughout the years, I enrolled in many adult art classes with the City Centre for Arts, Grant MacEwan, U of A, and EPSB. I experimented with various media – pencil drawing, watercolour, acrylic, and oil.

After I retired, I joined the Edmonton Art Club in 2009. I started to work in oils and entered paintings at the EAC shows. They included Misericordia Hospital, Scotia Place, the Ottewell Centre, and The Japanese Cultural Centre. I have sold work to private collections in Edmonton.

Most recently, I have been working with watercolours. It is a medium that suits my style. My paintings show the world as I see it. I am intrigued by light. Not only does it give shape and colour to objects but it creates shadows, reflections, and creates mood in a scene. The transparency of watercolour portrays this.

My paintings show everyday human experiences. They bring pleasure to me and I hope viewers can relate to them.
