Betty Dean

When I was accepted into the Edmonton Art Club many years ago, I was thrilled. For a long time, this membership had been a secret dream. I felt like I had ‘made it!’.

Since then, I have been so privileged to grow and develop my art, learning enough to know that you never ‘make it!’. But loving every minute of it.

The feel of applying paint, both the physical sensation and the emotional release, is like nothing else. Colours, lines, shapes and light fill my imagination and are reflected in my art. I see the intricacy of petals and delicate pollen, the power of trees and the energy of the clouds. Painting makes me feel a part of them.

I play and experiment with a variety of materials and processes, sometimes surprised and amazed at the ways in which things come together. My studio holds watercolours, acrylics, inks, pastels and crayons, each of which may be used in their pure form or combined with other materials in collage or print making. Most often, my subject matter is inspired by nature. As I work, I try to relax into it, breathing in space for magic and providing opportunities to learn and to reveal.

I continue to be a proud member of the Edmonton Art Club.
