This article represents a milestone in my life as an artist - it is an opportunity to ‘take stock’ of the plans I had for post-retirement.

The first time I sat in an art class at university, I realized why people kept going to school. It wasn’t necessarily for a career plan, or for what the future might hold. It was for the joy of doing what you love to do. For me, that was painting.

Although I wanted to spend the rest of my life making art, the demands of parenting and being self-supporting required more financially sustainable decisions! I completed my Bachelor of Education with a major in fine art, and later my Master of Education. As a public school teacher and principal I tried to remember the joy I felt in my art classes, and to keep that feeling alive in my classrooms. Throughout my career, the creative process took other directions, but I always knew I would return to the canvas when I retired from the school system. And I have!

Two groups - Ottewell Neighbours and the Edmonton Art Club, have both encouraged and inspired my work; my family and friends provide constant support. I have always been awed by the beauty of flowers, and have been absorbed by the challenges of capturing that beauty in either water color or acrylic. After taking courses with ELLA (Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association) my curiosity for mixed media has been tweaked, and I am beginning those explorations. My work is influenced by the Group of Seven, particularly the landscapes of Varley and Thomson, by Georgia O’Keeffe, and by countless local artists. I have always loved the Impressionists, particularly Monet and Cezanne, and the remarkable ways light permeates their work. The monthly critique sessions at the Edmonton Art Club awaken me to new ideas and perspectives and provide valuable insights.

I am just beginning my life as a painter, and wonder if I have the time, ability or patience to create work that reflects the beauty of the world. I want my work to express the joy I feel producing it, and remind me of those moments of awe.

It is hard not to be paralyzed by my ever growing list of ideas for paintings, or by the blank canvas I stand before! But as I apply my brush to the paint, I am loving every minute of it!
